HRO Consulting (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.

HRO is an intercultural, creative behavioral science firm, a provider of high quality Training, Assessment and Coaching services. The "O" in HRO stands for Objective: we are dedicated to reaching your objectives in your ASSESSMENT and TRAINING projects. We provide LOCALIZED and CUSTOMIZED services across China and more and more also in other regions in Asia.

We established HRO Shanghai to serve the Chinese market with advanced and innovative products in 2002. Since that the company acquired a steady customer base, and enhanced it's significant intellectual property and know-how in the area of Personnel Assessment and Training in China, with a steady customer base including major companies in Shanghai, and with representatives in Germany and in Australia.

HRO People



Gabor Nagy

Mr. Gabor Nagy, Managing Director of HRO, Senior Consultant and Trainer. He is a co-author of FiT In™ Professional Personality Profile, the HRO Motivational Questionnaire, and a few other assessment tools and competency models.

As a trainer, he combines “mental learning” with experiential training and workshop facilitation elements to achieve a lasting impact. His areas of training:
- Intercultural Communication/Management;
- Teambuilding (especially for intercultural groups);
- Personality Development;
- Motivation Skills;
- Interview Skills/Assessor Training.

Client companies for his in-house programs include: Ametek, Bacou-Dalloz, Bosch, Brady, Degussa, Fuchs Petrolub, Gale Pacific, ICA, International Nutrition, International Paint, Knorr-Bremse, Schenker, Shanghai Volkswagen, Sinochem, SLIC, UEAS, and he has been an invited speaker and lecturer at the German, Swedish, British and American Chamber of Commerce, and at the Tongji, Jiaoda, Maritime, Nordakademie University MBA/EMBA classes. He started to learn Chinese language in 1987, and started his career as a Chinese-Hungarian interpreter in Hungary, before holding a number of challenging positions across China for Global Autotech (Beijing Rep. Office Manager), Singapore Premier Technologies (Market Development Department Manager), and eGate InfoTech (Business Consultant). Mr. Nagy is also a Visiting Professor at the Shanghai Institute for Foreign Trade Professional Development Center. He is fluent in English, Chinese and Hungarian.


Frieder Demmer

Mr. Friedemann Demmer, Senior Partner and Senior Consultant, Co-Author of FiT In™ assessment system, builds on 12 years experience in training and assessment, including more than 800 job-fit assessment projects for the German Employment Office. Mr. Demmer has worked for five years in BFI Peters, a well known German vocational training company, as trainer and project leader coordinating the work of 100 specialist. In Shanghai, he has performed coaching and trainings for Shanghai VW, Nestle, Siemens Dematic, Schenker, ICA, Osram, NEC, Rohm & Haas, Weltbild, the German Chamber of Industry and Trade and a broad spectrum of small and midsize companies. He is the recommended expert by the German Chamber in Crisis Intervention and intercultural issues. Besides executive coaching, he also has significant achievements as a watersport coach: has worked with World- and Olympic Champions in white-water kayaking, and now a coach of the Shanghai International Friendship Dragonboating Team. His educational background includes a Master of Education, majoring in psychology, and a Postgraduate Program in Business Administration. Currently, he lives in Germany, and he plays a key role in the quickly growing Business Academy of Peters.


Steve Mellau

Senior Consultant, Trainer & Coach, has extensive experience in corporate consulting and training: intercultural management issues, corporate culture, team building and group dynamics. In addition to training and consulting projects for leading multinational companies (TUI, Simens, LG, Raiffeisen Bank, CLARION, SANYO, T-Systems, DEGUSSA, Shanghai Volkswagen, SINOCHEM, International Paint, ICI, Cytec Shanghai, Knorr-Bremse Suzhou, Bosch Suzhou), he was an invited lecturer at the University of Budapest for cross-cultural group-dynamics from 2002-2004; since October 2005 he is visiting professor at Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade for HR Development practical applications. He is a certified coach of the WIAL (World Association of Action Learning Washington DC). As accepted facilitator and trainer he has held a number of challenging assignments in Germany, Austria, Hungary, India, South Korea, Indonesia and China. He is member of the TOPS Berlin TOPS Mnchen (Germany) of Trainer & Consultant Society. He holds a postgraduate degree in corporate psychology, speaks German, English, Hungarian and Romanian fluently and currently learns Chinese intensively.


Leon Zhang, BA in Psychology

Mr. Zhang, Assessment Consultant is a learner of psychology who really applies what he learnt in his work and in his life. Before joining HRO, he used to work in a special educational school, where he developed the ability to work and communicate with people of great individual differences eg deaf or autistic students. He has created and implemented an innovative psychologycal development program for deaf students. He is involved in assessment tool development, personnel assessment and training at HRO.


Vivian Guo, PhD

Ms. Vivian Guo, university lecturer, besides working as psychologist in the past, has also hosted a popular psychological hotline radio show. Ms Guo has completed her Ph.D. in Management Psychology at Eastern China Normal University, with a significant thesis on organizational citizenship, based on quantitative research in 9 corporations. She has been lecturer of Shanghai Normal University Applied Psychology Department teaching organizational behavior and has been a Teaching Assistant for organizational behavior in the MBA program held by the University of West Australia. She is involved in assessment tool development, personnel assessment and training at HRO.


Karin Kutnar-Griehsnig

Ms. Kutnar-Griehsnig, or as called by the people, Karin, is a Senior Consultant with 12 years experience in Recruitment and HR Management, including Recruiting Manager at Philips Components (Austria) and HR Manager for Neckermann Versand, the leading German mail order company's Austrian branch. She brings up-to-date European HR best practices to China with a special focus on Selection and Assessment, building on 100+ Assessment Center design/implementation experience. She is a regular lecturer teaching HRM at Technikum Joanneum, a leading Austrian university of applied sciences. Her areas of strength are Recruitment & Placement, Interviewing & Selection, Personnel Management & Training/Coaching, Conflict Resolution, Employee Relations. She is fluent in German and English, has excellent communication and presentation skills, with in-depth awareness of multicultural issues and basic Chinese knowledge. Karin is a Master of Law from Karl Franzens-University, Austria.


George Guo

Mr. Guo started his career as a TV program project manager, later became a salesman and brand manager for a major food company, now works as advertisement strategy consultant and part time team building trainer. Building on the experience of conducting more than 100 team building training programs for client companies including IBM, AIA, Honeywell, Johnson & Johnson, Rockwell, Brady, Schenker etc. and combining his intellect and wide knowledge area with commitment to high quality trainings, Mr Guo is one of the most effective team building trainers in Shanghai.


Professor Zhuang Enping

Mr. Zhuang, Senior Consultant is an intercultural specialist and trainer. He is professor of intercultural business communication of Shanghai University, specializing in cultural conflicts and cultural synergy in multinational companies. He is a vice president of China Association for Intercultural Communication (Shanghai Branch), also a director of Intercultural Business and Management Consulting Center. His research and consulting include Shanghai GM (Sino-US), Shanghai Volkswagen (Sino-German), Shanghai GE (Sino-US), Beijing-Jeep (Sino-US), Guangzhou-Peugeot (Sino-France), and some other companies. He is also a senior trainer in Shanghai Foreign Investment Association for top managers of foreign invested companies in Shanghai. In addition, he has experiences in teaching Intercultural Business Communication in MBA programs in China and in the United States. His publications include three books and numerous articles ranging from the framework of intercultural communication study, designing of training programs to the application of its study in joint ventures and mergers. He has had interviews with China International Broadcast, CCTV4 and many other media. His training material as a textbook has been widely used in China.


Professor Zhou

Professor Zhou Chun, HRO's Senior Advisor for Cultural Issues, is an expert in comparing linguistics focusing on the German, English and Chinese languages. From 1949-1955, he was working as the first interpreter of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Peoples Republic of China, he translated for Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai. Mr. Zhou Chun has spent 13 years in Germany, living and lecturing in Berlin. He returned to Shanghai in 2002. You will not find many living people with a deeper understanding of what China has gone through in the last 50 years, whilst also having long experience in western societies and a stunning capability of communicating all this fluently in Chinese, English and in German.


Stormy Zhong

Stormy Zhong, Marketing Manager, Assistant Consultant of HRO. More than 10 years experience in sales and marketing. She has participated in training programs as Assistant Trainer and Resource Consultant in the last 5 years. She has organized various group activities as the major organizer and facilitator. Major in English and Integrated Marketing Communication.



Personality Testing Researchers

The HRO team built on the personality testing research of Dr. Lewis R. Goldberg and Dr. John A. Johnson. Dr. Lewis R. Goldberg, a senior scientist at Oregon Research Institute and Professor Emeritus at the University of Oregon, serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personality & Individual Differences, the European Journal of Personality, and the Journal of Personality Assessment. He has more than 100 publications in the field of personality psychology.

Dr. John A. Johnson is professor at the Pennsylvania State University; his main research field is personality tests during personnel selection. He received award from University of Bielefeld, received the Provost's Collaborative and Curricular Innovations Special Recognition Program Award, received first place of STAR Project Award and received Alumni/Student Award for Excellence in Teaching. Besides numerous publications in journals, he also published a book: Hogan, R., Johnson, J. A., & Briggs, S. R. (1997). Handbook of personality psychology. San Diego: Academic Press.
